How much time do you need to work on your website for it to become successful?
That's a question many people have when first starting out.
Is it 10,000 hours? 1,000 hours? 100 hours? No one seems to know...
One problem that faces us is that the quality of time spent differs greatly depending on the person who's doing the work, and what specific part of the website they're focusing on.
If you remember the 80/20 rule, you'll know that 80% of the results come from 20% of your work, so if you focus your efforts on the right things, you'll get more bang for your buck.
Simply put, you'll get better results by working 20 hours on the right things, rather than 80 hours working on the wrong things.
Of course, I can't tell you what to work on because it's different for every website and person. It might be a part of the website design, content, SEO optimization, forum posting, image creation, etc...
However if you find your 20% of the important work, it'll be much easier to succeed in your niche.
Let's consider a couple of possible times it could take you to build your site.

1 Hour
With all the numerous website builders out there and easy ways to buy a domain, you could have a website up and running within an hour.
However, will the content be great?
Probably not... Unless you already have loads of amazing content that you have written before.
Will it look good?
It won't be terrible because you'll probably use one of the free themes your website builder offers you, but it will won't look unique and will be obvious that it's a template because there isn't much customization you could do in an hour.

10 Hours
If you're a capable web developer, you could scrape up a good-looking website in 10 hours, and if you're using a website builder you would have more than enough time to customize it and make it look unique and aesthetically pleasing.
If you split your time half and half between design and content creation, you'd have 5 hours of content you could create.
Depending on your writing speed, you could write 2-6 high quality, authority articles for your blog/website, or around 3000-10000 words if you're not working on long blog posts.
If you already have a lot of the writing done, and if all you need is a website shell then 10 hours is more than enough to make it look nice and put your content on there.

100+ Hours
100 hours of work on a website isn't all that rare if you're setting up a website that'll have a lot of user submissions or user content, or if you're writing a lot of content for your website.
In 100 hours you could learn enough CSS, HTML, and design to scrap up a good-looking website, but you could also use a template from a website editor and spend 5-10 hours editing it to make it your own. 10 hours is more than enough to make it look nice.
That gives you around 90 hours to create your content for your website! That's enough time to write 54,000-180,000 words, or over at least 30 incredible, authority blog posts.
If you spend 90 hours creating the content for your site and making sure it's high quality, you should be set.

The Small Problem
None of the above times account for SEO and your other strategies for getting viewers to your site. The better your content is, the easier it is to get the readers to stay and recommend it to their friends or at least give you a like on Facebook. However, you will probably have to spend at least 15-30 minutes a day for a month reaching out to website owners and helping out people on forums with a link to your site.
